WHO WE ARE

The Aircraft Noise Abatement Office staff serves as the link between the public and the airline operators. The staff has two main purposes: insuring that flights operate as quietly as possible, and providing accurate and accessible information about the noise abatement program to community residents.

 

   
   

Mike McCarron – Director of Community Affairs

Mr. McCarron is in charge of the department's policy implementation and is the Airport’s primary liaison to the Airport community. Having worked previously as an Emergency Planner, Operations Supervisor, Duty Manager, Superintendent of Operations, and Assistant Deputy Airport Director, as well as a Naval Flight Officer on both active duty and in the Naval Reserve, Mike has a thorough understanding of aircraft operational requirements, procedures, and limitations. One of his top priorities is the continued development and expansion of proactive community outreach programs. Mr. McCarron also represents the Airport before local, national, and international media regarding operations, policies and procedures at SFO, including the latest in noise abatement at the airport.

  • 3000+ hours in the U.S. Navy’s P-3C “Orion” aircraft


   
   

Bert Ganoung Manager – Aircraft Noise Abatement Office

Mr. Ganoung is responsible for the implementation of noise abatement procedures and policies at SFO. He is also manager of the new noise management system. Mr. Ganoung oversees the staff in the Noise Abatement Office, as well as monitoring noise complaints, working with the San Francisco International Airport/Community Roundtable and preparing special reports.

David Ong – Systems Manager

Mr. Ong’s responsibilities include coordinating the installation and testing of new noise monitoring system components, overseeing the relocation and modernization of remote noise monitoring sites, collating data, preparing the Director's Report, and assisting the Aircraft Noise Abatement Manager on special projects.

• Member of SFO Noise Abatement Staff since 2000.
• Industry experience as an Air Force Maintenance Technician
and Test Engineer with Space Systems Loral.
• Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics
with a minor in Aviation Safety.


   
   

Richard Flaa – Noise Abatement Specialist

Mr. Flaa’s assignments include assisting with the noise monitoring system, investigating unusual flight occurrences, collecting data and preparing daily flight and noise activity reports. Mr. Flaa also responds to citizen complaints and concerns regarding aircraft operations from SFO.

• Joined the SFO Team in July of 2005.
• Bachelor of Science, Aerospace Studies
• Private Pilot since 1998

 

   
   

Barbara Lawson and Shirley Burdett are Senior Information Systems Operators

Their job is to transcribe all the noise complaints received via e-mail (sfo.noise@flysfo.com) and on the "hot line", entering the names and information into the office database. The office has 2 voice mailboxes, each capable of holding over a hundred complaints.

All first time complaints receive a follow-up letter with their caller code and an information packet with copies of the recent Director's Report, the Fly Quiet Report and an instruction sheet for the Near-Live Flight Tracks on the web.

 

   
   

Gail Van Sciver – Administration

Handles the daily administrative support operations of the Aircraft Noise Abatement office. She is the liaison with the Airport Administration, the Public Affairs office (or Communications and Marketing office), and the other Airport Departments.
